Francisco Lupi
Francisco Lupi (March 6, 1920 – January 14, 1954) was a Portuguese chess master. In January 1940 he faced world champion Alexander Alekhine in Estoril, losing a blindfold simultaneous game; in February 1940 he drew a regular game with Alekhine there. During World War II he was a prominent Portuguese player and played many tournaments and exhibitions in Spain in the 1940s and early 1950s. In spring 1945 he lost a match to Ramón Rey Ardid in Zaragoza. He played in the Gijón tournaments in 1945 and 1946; in Sabadell in August 1945 he tied for 3rd-4th (Alekhine won), and in Cáceres in autumn 1945 he beat Alekhine. In January 1946 he lost a match to Alekhine in Estoril (+1 –2 =1), Alekhine’s last competition. In 1946 he finished last in the London B Tournament (2.5/11); Max Euwe won. He played in Madrid in 1951 (Pablo Morán won). Lupi died in Madrid in January 1954.
