Canal basin
A canal basin is a wide area of water next to or at the end of a canal, bigger than the canal itself. It lets boats moor, unload cargo, and turn around without blocking traffic. Inland basins act like inland harbours. They are often surrounded by wharves for commercial use. Today, many canal basins are mainly used to moor residential and recreational narrowboats.
