Callianassa is a genus of mud shrimps in the family Callianassidae. It belongs to the animal kingdom (Animalia), the arthropod phylum (Arthropoda), the class Malacostraca, and the order Decapoda. The genus was named by Leach in 1814, with the type species Cancer subterraneus (Astacus subterraneus) Montagu, 1808. Some species once placed in Callianassa have been moved to other genera: C. candida, C. tyrrhena and C. whitei are now in Pestarella, and C. filholi is in Biffarius. The name Callianassa comes from a Nereid in Greek mythology. Six species are currently recognised in the genus, and several fossil species are known as well.
