Music Waste is a yearly, non-profit festival of music, art, and comedy in Vancouver, Canada. It started in 1994 as a protest against the entry fees of the corporate-sponsored New Music West festival. Since then it has become a central part of Vancouver’s music scene, showing innovative local and nearby acts. All shows cost at most $5 and are held at venues within walking distance to keep it affordable and easy to attend. From 2004 to 2008, it was organized by a group called Only, which published a quirky festival guide; Discorder magazine now produces the guide. Since 2008, Music Waste has been run by volunteers. The festival’s logos were designed by Vancouver artist Sean Maxey. In 2007, readers of the Georgia Straight named Music Waste the 3rd Best Festival in Vancouver. The 2012 edition ran June 7–10 and featured over 100 acts across 24 venues.
