Puget-Rostang
Puget-Rostang is a small mountain commune in southeastern France, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. It covers 122.46 square kilometers and has a population of 116 (as of 2023), giving it a very low population density. The village sits at elevations from 537 to 1,738 meters, averaging around 771 meters, which gives a cool Mediterranean climate moderated by altitude.
It is about 70 kilometers from Nice and 6 kilometers from Puget-Théniers, near the confluence of the Mairola and Riou d’Auvare rivers. The Mairola valley lies nearby and Mount Cimaillon (1,514 meters) dominates the area and was once topped by a castle.
Historically, the village relied on small-scale farming. The rocky soil made grain hard to grow, vineyards provided only for family use, and most families kept a few sheep and goats. Prunes were the notable crop. In recent decades artisanal products have become the main local economy, and an eco-museum showcases traditional tools for visitors.
The current mayor is Philippe Hachet (2020–2026).
