Brompton-on-Swale is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It sits three miles east of Richmond and about ten miles north-west of Northallerton, on the north bank of the River Swale.

History and name: The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Brunton. Over the centuries the manor changed hands several times and was associated with Easby Abbey for a period. The name comes from Old English words for broom (brōm) and village (tūn); the river suffix was added later.

Location and transport: The Dere Street route runs between the A1(M) and A6136 near the village. Brompton-on-Swale used to have Catterick Bridge railway station (closed in 1969). The A1 through the village was upgraded to a three-lane motorway, completed in 2017. Northbound traffic uses the Scotch Corner interchange, and southbound traffic uses the Catterick interchange. The B6272 and B6271 roads pass through the village, and the old A1 is now the A6055 to the east.

Population and governance: The parish population was 1,879 in 2011. The area is part of the Richmond and Northallerton parliamentary constituency and is administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council since 2023. The parish council has eight members.

Community and amenities: Brompton-on-Swale has a Church of England Primary School with around 140 pupils, opened in 1983. There are two pubs, The Crown and The Farmer’s Arms; a former pub, King William IV, is a Grade II listed building. There is a post office in the local shop. A recreation ground and sports hall host local cricket teams.

Churches and chapels: St Paul’s Church was built in 1838 and is a Grade II listed building. The Methodist chapel, built in 1890 and refurbished in 2007, is also Grade II listed.

Environment: The parish maintains a riverbank common with a variety of trees and wildflowers along the river.

Nearby towns: Scorton, Catterick, Colburn and Hipswell are all within about two miles.
