Blind Leading the Blind (Mumford & Sons song)
Blind Leading the Blind is a single by English rock band Mumford & Sons. It was released on October 21, 2019, and runs 3 minutes and 44 seconds. The track was released on Glassnote and written by Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane. Paul Epworth produced the song.
The band first played the song live in 2016 and it was recorded during their Delta studio sessions at The Church Studios in London.
In a press release, the band said Blind Leading the Blind had been something they’d kept in reserve and helped shape much of Delta, with themes and feelings they hadn’t finished in time for the original release. They also noted renewed focus after receiving the John Steinbeck Award at San Jose State University, saying the song touches on topics related to Steinbeck’s work.
Steinbeck’s influence appears in other Mumford & Sons songs as well, such as Dust Bowl Dance, Timshel, and Rose of Sharon.
A music video for a live version filmed at the Austin City Limits Music Festival (Weekend One) on August 6, 2019, was released on October 25, 2019. Another video followed on December 6, 2019. Both videos were directed by Nick Davies.
Marcus Mumford said working with Nick Davies was a privilege and that the team aimed to capture the song’s anger and introspection, using imagery like a drum kit and a sweaty laundry in Bangkok from on tour as inspiration.
