Arne Langeland
Arne Langeland (24 November 1928 – 15 December 2019) was a Norwegian lawyer, civil servant and diplomat. He was born in Nøtterøy and earned a law degree. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1953 and became subdirector in 1963. From 1965 to 1970 he served as counselor at the Norwegian embassy in Geneva. After a period working as a lawyer, he returned to diplomacy in 1976 as Vice Secretary General of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
In 1978 he became deputy under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Trade, and from 1981 to 1982 he was the permanent under-secretary of state. He then spent six years as CEO of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions. In 1988 he was appointed Norwegian ambassador to France, a position he held until 1993, and he served as ambassador to the Netherlands from 1994 to 1996. Arne Langeland died on 15 December 2019, aged 91.
