Bill Baxter (Scottish footballer)
Bill Baxter (William Baxter) was a Scottish footballer born on 21 September 1924 in Methil, Scotland, and died on 9 November 2002 in Leven, Scotland. He played as a wing half.
He started at Wolverhampton Wanderers as a groundstaff member in 1939, and during the war he guest played for Leicester City, Mansfield Town and Notts County. He turned professional with Wolves in September 1945 and made his league debut on 4 December 1948 in a 1-0 win over Everton. He played 43 league games for Wolves and scored 1 goal, and was with the club during their 1953-54 championship season, though he was not a regular starter.
In November 1953 he moved to Aston Villa, where he made 98 league appearances and scored 6 goals. He retired from playing in 1957 but stayed with Villa as a coach and assistant manager until 1967. He then returned to Scotland to manage East Fife (1969-1970) and Raith Rovers (1970-1971).
His son Stuart Baxter became a football player and manager, and his grandson Lee Baxter is a former player and now a goalkeeping coach.
