House of Representatives (Cyprus)

The House of Representatives is the national unicameral parliament of the Republic of Cyprus. It was founded in 1960. Members are elected every five years by proportional representation. Seats were allocated for Greek and Turkish Cypriots, but Turkish Cypriot representatives have been vacant since 1964.

It is the only legislature in the European Union that operates within a fully presidential system. General elections are held on the second Sunday of the month before the term ends. The outgoing House stays in office until the new one takes office, but it cannot pass laws except in urgent or exceptional circumstances. The House may dissolve itself, setting the date for general elections to be held 30 to 40 days afterward.

The President of the House is elected from the Greek Cypriot members, and the Vice-President from the Turkish Cypriot members. If the President is absent, the eldest member of the respective community performs the duties, unless the members decide otherwise.

The current President is Annita Demetriou (since 10 June 2021). The House meets in Nicosia, and its website is parliament.cy.
