Belgrade City Hall and Jail
Belgrade City Hall and Jail
Belgrade City Hall and Jail is a historic building on Broadway at Northern Pacific Boulevard in Belgrade, Montana. Built in 1912, it was designed by Bozeman architect Fred F. Willson. The two-story brick building has a flat roof and a decorative parapet. The brick is laid in common bond, with every seventh row being a header, and the front sill is cut sandstone from Columbus, Montana.
Architecturally, it is a late Gothic style rendered in a Western vernacular. Notable features include corbelled brick along the cornice and a stepped parapet that resembles tall chimneys. Although made of brick, it follows the Western false-front tradition, making the street-facing façade look larger and more impressive than the sides.
Over the years, the building has housed many functions: city hall, police and fire station, jail, courthouse, library, post office, theatre, and a community hall with a basketball court. In 1981 it contained city offices and a senior citizens’ headquarters on the first floor, with a community hall and auditorium above.
The Belgrade City Hall and Jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and the property covers less than one acre.
