Phyllostegia kaalaensis
Phyllostegia kaalaensis, also known as the Kaala phyllostegia, is a flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae) that is native only to the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. It grows in mesic forests on the slopes of the Waiʻanae Range at elevations of about 374–796 meters (1,227–2,612 feet). The species is critically endangered. In 2003 there were only about 36–37 individuals remaining in the wild, and by 2008 wild populations were thought to be extinct. Some plants have been propagated and planted back into suitable habitat in an effort to restore the population.
