Andrew Shumack
Andrew Shumack Jr. was an American freelance journalist and photographer from Pennsylvania. Born in 1969 to Andrew Shumack Sr. and Carol Bradley, he was the youngest of six children and had worked for the Bethlehem Star before traveling to Russia. In 1995, during the First Chechen War, he left Saint Petersburg for Chechnya and disappeared eight days later, on July 28, while heading toward the mountains near Grozny.
The St. Petersburg Press had given him a letter of introduction to obtain press credentials, and he planned to send photos and stories to the paper for three months and to share images with The Philadelphia Inquirer. A Spanish reporter had notified the U.S. Embassy that Shumack's knapsack had been left at the Grozny press center. His backpack, sleeping bag, and documents were later found abandoned at his hotel in Grozny.
He is presumed dead, as no one has heard from him since and U.S. officials have been unable to locate him.
