Belgium–Philippines relations
Belgium–Philippines relations cover the diplomatic ties between Belgium and the Philippines. Each country has an embassy in the other's capital: Belgium in Manila and the Philippines in Brussels. The relationship goes back to colonial times when King Leopold II of Belgium considered purchasing the Philippines in 1875, but the offer was rejected. Formal diplomatic relations were established on July 4, 1946. In September 1995, Belgian official Reginald Moreels announced that the Philippines would be a “partner country” and a priority for Belgian development aid; this status lasted until April 2000. Since 1995, Belgium has provided more than 45 million euros in grants and loans to support the Philippines’ development.
