Bebearia carshena
Bebearia carshena, the shining blue forester, is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family.
Where it lives
- It is found in forests across West and Central Africa, including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, western Uganda, and northwestern Tanzania.
- It prefers dense forest habitats.
What it looks like
- Male: The upper wings are dark, with a bright greenish-blue patch from the base to about the middle of the wings. There are small black streaks and a large black spot on the hindwing. The underside is light yellow with brown markings.
- Female: The forewings lack some dark spots that the male has, and the hindwing shows a large pale yellow area near the edge. The hindwing’s median band is not greatly wider toward the front, and the underside pattern is similar to the male but lighter.
Food for young
- The larvae (caterpillars) feed on Marantochloa species.
