Bayview, Idaho

Bayview is a small, unincorporated community in Kootenai County in the northwest United States. It sits on the southwest shore of Lake Pend Oreille, about seven miles east-northeast of Athol and north of Coeur d’Alene. The town is along State Highway 54 and has the ZIP code 83803. Its elevation is about 2,100 feet.

Nearby is Farragut State Park, located four miles west of Bayview. The park sits on the grounds of the old Farragut Naval Training Station, a major World War II facility. A U.S. Navy unit based in Bayview, the Acoustic Research Detachment, tests new submarine and ship designs there as part of the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Bayview’s population was about 75 in 1909 and 250 in 1960.

Farragut State Park covers about 4,000 acres and borders Lake Pend Oreille. It has a small beach, a network of trails that connect to Bayview, and disc golf. The park is a great place for wildlife viewing, with animals such as mountain goats, whitetail deer, badgers, black bears, coyotes, bobcats, and occasional elk.

Bayview hosts the annual Bayview Daze summer celebration in early July.

The Lake Pend Oreille Yacht Club (LPOYC) is based in Bayview. It is a non-profit that promotes sailing, racing, and education on the lake. Lake Pend Oreille has more than 200 miles of shoreline and stretches about 42 miles from Bayview to Sandpoint. People enjoy fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, camping, hiking, biking, and fall hunting around the lake.

The Bayview area has a rich sailing history. The Lake Pend Oreille Yacht Club began in 1977 to promote sailing in Sandpoint. As members moved to Bayview, the club expanded south, and the Sandpoint Sailing Association (SSA) was created to help keep sailing opportunities strong in the northern part of the lake. The SSA works with LPOYC to provide racing and cruising events.
