Battle of Salzbach (Sasbach)

The Battle of Salzbach took place on 27 July 1675 during the Franco-Dutch War near the village of Salzbach in present-day Germany. An Imperial army led by Raimondo Montecuccoli fought a French army commanded by Marshal Turenne.

The fighting was mainly an artillery duel. The French cannon and the Imperial gunsExchange shots, with both sides trying to gain the upper hand. In the middle of the action, Turenne was struck by a cannonball and killed. His deputy, Saint-Hilaire, was wounded but survived.

The battle did not produce a decisive result. After Turenne’s death, the French fought on briefly but then retreated in an orderly fashion on the night of 29–30 July. Montecuccoli pressed the pursuing Imperial forces, but the French successfully crossed back into Alsace.

The battle is remembered for Turenne’s death and for ending without a clear winner. A monument marks the spot near where he died, and the Turenne-Museum is nearby.
