Battle of Sadhaura
Battle of Sadhaura (1710)
The Battle of Sadhaura was part of the Mughal–Sikh Wars. It was fought in Sadhaura between Sikh forces led by Banda Singh Bahadur and Mughal forces allied with Sayyids and Shaikhs, commanded by Osman Khan.
Osman Khan, the ruler of Sadhaura, had persecuted Hindus and Sikhs and killed Pir Budhu Shah for helping Guru Gobind Singh. His harsh rule and anti-Sikh policies helped fuel rebellion.
In the battle, the Sikhs defeated the besieging forces. The defenders retreated behind the city walls, the fort was captured and destroyed, and the town was looted. There was a massacre of people who sought shelter in the house of Pir Badruddin Shah.
Osman Khan was captured and hanged by the Sikhs. After the victory, Banda Singh Bahadur appointed his own governor in Sadhaura and solidified control over the area. Many peasants joined Banda’s revolt, bolstering the Sikh strength.
Casualties: Mughal forces suffered heavy losses; Sikh casualties are not known.
