Gogo Graham
Gogo Graham (born 1991) is an American fashion designer who makes clothes for trans women. She grew up in Pearland, Texas, and now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has worked with designer Zaldy and has shown two collections at New York Fashion Week. Her brand focuses on clothing that fits trans women and on building a supportive community around them.
Graham studied at the University of Texas at Austin, starting in pre-med. One credit short of graduation, she switched to textiles and apparel, which sparked her interest in design. After college, she moved to New York City to be closer to fashion. She felt that trans women weren’t welcome in mainstream fashion, so she began designing for the bodies she knows.
In New York she worked with Zaldy on costumes for a J-Pop group and RuPaul. She later worked in a Midtown factory that allowed more creative freedom and began collaborating with photographer Serena Jara. After coming out as a trans woman, she started making her own collections to address different body types and stylistic needs.
Graham’s brand is built on sustainability and one‑of‑a‑kind pieces. She recycles materials and involves the women who will wear the clothes in the design process, asking what features they want emphasized. She often casts the models first and then designs looks to fit them. She believes fashion should reflect the wearers and support marginalized people, not exploit them.
Her work is often provocative and DIY in feel, with deconstructed shapes, bold textures, and bright colors. She draws inspiration from video games like Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry. Her shows tackle issues like trans representation and stereotypes about Asian women, through collections such as Dragon Lady. Her Spring 2017 NYFW show blended femininity with sharp details, while her Autumn/Winter 2016 show used striking visuals to highlight the violence faced by trans people of color.
Gogo Graham also works as a sculptor, painter, and DJ, contributing soundtracks and backstage styling to her shows. She emphasizes using trans models to keep her work authentic and often brings together models and artists who advocate for transgender rights. She continues to push for financial support for trans models so they are paid and protected in the fashion industry.
She has released multiple collections and continues to design bespoke pieces rather than ready-made lines. Her goal is to empower trans women through fashion and to push for a future where trans fashion has a secure, respected place in the industry.
