Overview:
The Battle of Estrelleta was a key engagement in the Dominican War of Independence. On September 17, 1845, Dominican troops from the Army of the South under General Antonio Duvergé faced a larger Haitian army commanded by General Jean-Louis Pierrot near the frontier at Estrelleta. The Dominicans held defensive positions and repulsed a Haitian cavalry charge with bayonets, securing a clear victory. The battle followed prior Dominican raids into Haiti in June, a Haitian counterattack in July, and an August Haitian invasion of the Dominican Republic.
