377th Troop Carrier Squadron
The 377th Troop Carrier Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was with the 60th Troop Carrier Wing, and it was inactivated at Dreux-Louvilliers Air Base in France on 25 September 1958.
The unit began in early 1942 as a B-25 Mitchell medium bombardment squadron under the Third Air Force. It trained at Columbia Army Air Base, South Carolina, first as an Operational Training Unit to create new squadrons, then in 1943 as a Replacement Training Unit for B-25 pilots and aircrew before sending personnel overseas.
It was inactivated on 1 May 1944 with the phaseout of B-25 training.
Reactivated in 1949 in the Air Force Reserve as a Troop Carrier Squadron prepared for C-46 Commandos, it was never manned or equipped and was finally inactivated in 1950.
Reactivated again in 1955 as a Tactical Air Command C-123 Provider Troop Carrier Squadron, it was among the first units to fly the C-123. It deployed to France in 1956 to reinforce NATO and USAFE, flying transport and special air missions across France, West Germany, Italy, Spain and England, and conducting dispersed operating base supply missions to cut road convoys.
Due to high operating costs, USAFE decided the C-123 was not worth the expense. In July–August 1958, aircraft and personnel were returned to Ardmore AFB and reassigned to squadrons of the 463d Troop Carrier Wing at Sewart AFB, Tennessee. The squadron was inactivated as a paper unit in September 1958.
