Kate Drumgoold
Kate Drumgoold was born into slavery around 1858 near Petersburg, Virginia. She wrote an autobiography in 1898 called A Slave Girl's Story, Being an Autobiography of Kate Drumgoold. The book carries messages of racial uplift, faith, and education. It offers a rare portrait of a former slave who moved between New York City's urban life and the rural South.
