Balele Mountains
The Balele Mountains, also called Balelesberg or Belelasberg, are a group of hills mainly in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They rise north of the town of Utrecht and lie northeast of Newcastle and Volksrust, with Wakkerstroom nearby. The highest point is Vaalkop, at about 1,845 meters (6,053 feet). The cliffs are mostly dolerite, like the nearby Drakensberg. In the early 1900s coal was mined here by the Utrecht Collieries Company. In 1906 the Natal government planned a railway from Utrecht to Newcastle, and the line was opened in 1910 by Governor Lord Methuen.
