Hangwani Maumela is a South African businessman known as a tenderpreneur. He’s been linked to a large corruption investigation at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng. Investigators have described him as the head of a syndicate that allegedly took large amounts of money from hospital contracts. Maumela has not been charged or convicted, and he denies any wrongdoing.

Business and the Tembisa Hospital scandal
Maumela built a network of companies that supplied Gauteng health facilities. At least fourteen of his firms won contracts at Tembisa Hospital, totaling hundreds of millions of rands. Whistleblowers and investigators say the network used shell companies and irregular bidding to win tenders and inflate payments. Babita Deokaran, a key whistleblower, had flagged many suspicious payments before she was murdered in 2021. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) later described Maumela as the kingpin of the largest fraud activity tied to Tembisa Hospital, with many suppliers under review and hundreds of millions of rands linked to his group.

Asset seizures and investigations
From mid-2025, state agencies moved to seize Maumela’s assets. The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) froze hundreds of millions of rands’ worth of property and vehicles, including luxury homes in Sandton, Bantry Bay and Ballito, plus several high-end cars and a Pagani Huayra Roadster. In one operation, a preservation order covered around R900 million in assets linked to a hospital fraud syndicate, and day-one seizures reached about R133.5 million. Overall, authorities have identified assets worth hundreds of millions of rands connected to Maumela and his associates.

Personal background and connections
Maumela is from Johannesburg and is also known as Morgan Hangwani Maumela. His aunt was once married to President Cyril Ramaphosa, which has led to public questions about any links. Ramaphosa has said he met Maumela only once by coincidence and had no ongoing relationship with him.

Current status
Maumela has not been formally charged with a crime, and no conviction has been reported. Civil asset-forfeiture actions continue, and authorities are pressing to recover funds. Political parties and civic groups have urged faster prosecution and the return of stolen money. The case has drawn widespread attention in South Africa, with debates about governance, corruption, and government oversight of hospital procurement.
