B. D. Schwartz
Benjamin David Schwartz, known as B. D. Schwartz, was a Polish-born American businessman and politician in North Carolina. Born January 17, 1909 in Poland as Berek Schwartzblatt, he moved to the United States with his family when he was four. He studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Schwartz served as Mayor of Wilmington in the 1970s. He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1972 to 1978 and of the North Carolina Senate from 1978 to 1980. He was married to Sylvia Wolk (married in 1931; she died in 1997).
He died on July 11, 2001, at age 92. Schwartz Hall at UNC Wilmington is named in his honor. His brother Bill also served on Wilmington’s city council and as mayor.
