Pirate Freedom is a fantasy novel by Gene Wolfe about Christopher, a tall, genetically engineered young man who time-travels to the 17th‑century Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy, with some scenes set in the early 21st century. The story is told as Chris recounting his life and the life he writes about, mixing adventure with reflections on faith.

As a child in a post‑Communist Cuba, Chris ends up in Havana, where he steals to survive. He signs on to a Spanish ship headed for Veracruz, Mexico, and then meets the English captain Captain Burt. On a voyage to Spain, he becomes involved with Estrellita, only to have their relationship complicated by real names and loyalties. Burt captures a Spanish slave ship, and Chris is tasked with steering it to Port Royal, but he refuses to fully join in piracy and is left on Hispaniola, where a French buccaneer helps him survive. He and his new crew fight the Spanish, and a woman who is Estrellita (though he calls her Novia) becomes a lover.

Chris and Burt’s fleets roam around South America, robbing as they go. At Río Hato, Panama, they raid a mule train carrying Peruvian gold, but that night a mutiny wipes out most of the pirates and takes the treasure. Chris escapes, learns Burt’s treasure maps, and eventually marries Novia. He hires Brother Ignacio to care for Novia while he searches for the treasure. After a shipwreck, he is rescued by Mexican fishermen and ends up in the United States, where he becomes a priest. He discovers that Ignacio is actually his older self.

Finishing the manuscript of his life on a plane to Miami, Chris explains that he plans to go back in time again by becoming Ignacio, travel to 17th‑century Cuba, meet and care for Novia, become her husband, and reclaim Burt’s treasure. The book uses religious imagery and a lively, slangy narration. Critics note its mix of straightforward adventure with deep questions about faith and morality, and it was a finalist for the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
