John Moore (1788–June 17, 1867) was a Louisiana politician and planter. A slaveholder, he was a lifelong member of the Whig Party and served in the U.S. House of Representatives twice: from December 17, 1840, to March 3, 1843, for Louisiana’s 3rd district, and from March 4, 1851, to March 3, 1853, for Louisiana’s 4th district. Born in Berkeley County, Virginia, he moved to Franklin, Louisiana for education and later served in the Louisiana House of Representatives for St. Mary Parish from 1825 to 1834. He moved to Iberia Parish and married Mary Weeks, widow of the builder of the Shadows-on-the-Teche plantation. Moore was the last Whig elected to Congress from Louisiana and in 1861 attended Louisiana’s secession convention as a delegate. He died in Franklin, Louisiana, and was buried on his estate.
