Aura Elena Farfán is a Guatemalan human rights activist who helps families whose loved ones disappeared because of the Guatemalan government. She began her work after her brother was abducted by the military in 1984. She helped investigate the Dos Erres massacre in 1982, where about 200 people were killed, and her efforts contributed to the conviction of several military members. She co-founded and serves as Executive Director of FAMDEGUA (Familiares de Detenidos y Desaparecidos de Guatemala), a Guatemala City–based organization that supports families of the disappeared and is one of the country’s oldest human rights groups. Farfán has faced frequent death threats and was briefly kidnapped along with her driver by armed men on May 4, 2001. She was featured in Time magazine in 2015 and received the International Women of Courage Award in 2018.
