Augusto da Costa
Augusto da Costa (22 October 1920 – 1 March 2004), often known simply as Augusto, was a Brazilian footballer who played as a defender. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and began his career with São Cristóvão in 1936, staying until 1944. He then joined Vasco da Gama, where he played from 1945 to 1954, making 297 appearances and scoring 22 goals.
Internationally, he represented Brazil from 1946 to 1950, earning 18 caps and scoring one goal. He captained Brazil at the 1950 FIFA World Cup, leading the team to the final where they finished as runners-up after losing to Uruguay. He also helped Brazil win the 1949 Copa América and finish as runners-up in 1946. Augusto da Costa died on 1 March 2004 at the age of 83.
