Astaena alternata is a beetle in the Scarabaeidae family found in Panama. Adults are about 9 mm long and reddish brown. The head, legs and abdomen are shiny, while the pronotum (the shield behind the head), the elytra (wing covers), the pygidium (the end of the abdomen), and the underside of the thorax are dull and have a faint pearly shimmer. The species name refers to the pattern of bands on the elytra. It was described in 2021 by Lago.
