Ariel Pink, born Ariel Marcus Rosenberg in 1978 in Los Angeles, is an American musician known for his lo-fi,Retro-inspired sound. He helped popularize a movement critics call hypnagogic pop and chillwave, influencing many indie artists to mix memory, old technology, and pop songcraft.

Pink started making music as a teenager on an eight‑track recorder, building a huge collection of homemade tapes. His early work, initially released under names like Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, gained a cult following in the 2000s after Paw Tracks released The Doldrums, Worn Copy, and House Arrest. Most of his early output was created before 2004, with later releases helping him reach a larger audience.

In 2010, Pink released Before Today on the label 4AD, his first studio‑made album with a proper band and producer. It brought him wider attention and critical praise. He followed with Mature Themes (2012) and Pom Pom (2014), and later Dedicated to Bobby Jameson (2017) on Mexican Summer. His music often blends 1960s–1980s pop with raw, homemade recording textures, creating a distinctive, hazy sound.

Pink’s career has included various collaborations and evolving lineups. He has also faced controversy for provocative remarks and on‑stage behavior. In 2021, Mexican Summer ended their relationship with him after he attended the Capitol rally in Washington, D.C.

Continuing under the project Ariel Pink’s Dark Side, he released The Key of Joy Is Disobedience in 2022, and Never Made A Demo, Ever appeared in 2023. A new album, With You Every Night, was announced for 2025. His work is praised for blurring the lines between high and low art and for reviving interest in retro pop sounds.

Musically, Pink draws from ’70s radio, ’80s new wave, and lo‑fi recording. He often recorded at home on cassette, tracking parts one at a time, which gave his songs their signature imperfect glow. Critics credit him with shaping hauntology and the broader revival of nostalgic, retro-inspired indie music, even as he insists his goals weren’t about reviving a specific trend. His influence can be seen in a wide range of modern indie artists who celebrate vintage sounds and DIY aesthetics.
