Arabs Travelling in the Desert

Arabs Travelling in the Desert is a painting from 1843 by the French artist Horace Vernet. It shows a group of travelers crossing the desert on camels. The style reflects the Orientalist trend that was popular at the time. Vernet began his career during the Napoleonic era and became well known for his battle scenes; he also travelled widely in French Algeria. The title may be a misnomer, as the scene likely depicts Vernet with his cousin Charles Burton and his nephew Frédéric Goupil-Fesquet. The painting was probably made from memory during a trip to the Russian Empire. It was shown at the Paris Salon in 1844. Today it hangs in the Wallace Collection in London, bought by the Marquess of Hertford.
