Anne Grenville, Baroness Grenville
Anne Grenville, Baroness Grenville (born Anne Pitt; September 1772 – June 1864) was an English noblewoman and author from the Pitt family, a powerful political clan in Britain. She became the wife of William Wyndham Grenville, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1806 to 1807.
Early life
She was the daughter of Thomas Pitt, 1st Baron Camelford, and Anne Wilkinson. Her granduncle was William Pitt the Elder, and her cousin once removed was William Pitt the Younger. She traveled to Italy with her father and, in Rome, sat for a portrait of her as Hebe by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
Marriage and connections
Anne Pitt married William Grenville on 18 July 1792. The Grenville and Pitt families were already linked, and her dowry was about £20,000.
Inheritance
In 1804 she inherited a large fortune from her brother Thomas Pitt, 2nd Baron Camelford, who had died in a duel. The estate was worth about £500,000 and included Boconnoc House in Cornwall and Camelford House in London.
Later life
Her husband served as Prime Minister from 1806 to 1807. William Grenville died in 1834, and Anne Grenville lived until June 1864. Copies of her letters survive in the British Library and the Hampshire Archives.
