Angel of Death (novel)
Angel of Death is a 1995 thriller by Jack Higgins featuring Sean Dillon, a former IRA enforcer, and Hannah Bernstein. They chase Daniel Quinn, a Protestant terrorist leader of a group called January 30, named after Bloody Sunday.
The group targets various government agencies and intelligence services worldwide, threatening the Northern Ireland peace process. Grace Browning, an actress turned assassin, leads January 30, with other members including Tom Curry, who works for the Russian government, and his friend Rupert Lang, a Member of Parliament. Dillon and Bernstein track Quinn from Belfast to Beirut, where Dillon is captured by an Israeli soldier and her brothers. He’s forced to interrogate one of Quinn’s men, which leads to a ship where Dillon detonates an explosion that kills Quinn, leaving January 30 without its leader.
Back in Ireland, Dillon and Bernstein are hired to protect Senator Patrick Keogh. Meanwhile, Ferguson discovers Rupert Lang is a traitor. The Prime Minister confronts Rupert, who manages to escape. Dillon follows Rupert to southern England, where Rupert is mortally wounded. After Rupert’s death, Tom learns of it and commits suicide by stepping in front of a train in London.
In the final act, Dillon and Bernstein confront Grace Browning at a theatre. Grace draws a gun, but Hannah shoots her dead—only to discover Grace’s gun was not loaded. With Grace’s defeat, January 30 is finished.
