Wormegay Castle

Wormegay Castle is a medieval fortification in Norfolk, England. It is a motte-and-bailey earthwork built near the village of Wormegay. It was probably built by Hermer de Ferrers soon after the Norman Conquest and stayed with the de Ferrers family until 1166.

The mound (the motte) stands about 5 metres high and measures roughly 77 by 62 metres at the base. A ditch surrounds three sides of the motte, up to 15 metres wide and 2 metres deep. The surrounding courtyard (the bailey) is about 150 by 88 metres and sits roughly 1 metre above the ground.

In medieval times the castle would have been a prominent landmark and helped control the local causeway across the Fens. Wormegay was the centre of a large feudal estate across East Anglia and provided castle-guard duties to Norwich Castle.
