Der Demokrat was a German-language newspaper in Davenport, Iowa. It ran from 1851 to September 8, 1918. Theodor Gülich founded it and edited it from 1851 to 1856; he was a socialist. In 1856 he sold the paper to Henry Lischer, and after that it supported Republican ideas. In 1877 the paper circulated about 1,500 copies daily and 4,200 weekly. It ended in 1918 because anti-German sentiment during World War I made German-language newspapers unpopular.
