Amy Gardner
Amy Gardner is a fictional character on The West Wing, played by Mary-Louise Parker. She first appears in season 3, episode 9, “The Women of Qumar.” The character was created after Parker sent a voicemail to Aaron Sorkin saying, “Josh Lyman badly needs to get laid, and I’m the one to do it.” Amy is a hardline feminist who also becomes a love interest for Josh Lyman, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff. Critics generally liked her feminist stance, but were split on whether her romance with Josh helped or hurt his relationship with Donna Moss.
Amy holds several roles during the show, including chief of staff to the First Lady, campaign consultant, political operative, and White House Director of Legislative Affairs. She is introduced as a tough feminist working with a women’s political action group and presses Josh on issues like a United Nations prostitution treaty. She even quips, “I didn’t burn my bras, J. In fact, I like my bras. I ring your bell when it’s important,” showing she can be assertive yet part of the political system.
A key moment comes in the season 3 episode “We Killed Yamamoto,” when Amy clashes with Josh over a marriage-incentives provision in a bill. She tries to block the bill by organizing women’s groups; Josh pushes for the bill anyway. The fight strains their relationship, and the White House ultimately passes the bill after Josh says he bribed Amy’s boss, causing Amy to lose the vote, her job, and her romance with Josh.
In season 4, Amy is hired by the First Lady to support her agenda, but she resigns, saying, “I wasn’t made to serve at someone else’s pleasure.” Some scholars view Amy as one of the few West Wing characters who challenges male leaders without being dependent on them.
Reception has been generally positive, though people disagree about whether Amy was the right match for Josh. The Atlantic ranked her among the best West Wing characters; Vulture placed her high among Sorkin’s characters; The A.V. Club praised her but noted the relationship’s ups and downs hurt her arc. Parker earned an Emmy nomination for playing Amy, though Stockard Channing won that year for Abbey Bartlet. The character’s influence shows up in other works, and fans sometimes told Parker she was “stealing him from Donna.”
