American Gods Season 2: A quick overview

The second season aired on Starz from March 10 to April 28, 2019, and consisted of eight episodes. Jesse Alexander took over as the sole showrunner after Bryan Fuller and Michael Green left the project. Production began in April 2018 after the season was greenlit in May 2017.

Cast and characters
- Returning stars: Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday), Emily Browning, Crispin Glover, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Orlando Jones, Mousa Kraish, Omid Abtahi, and Demore Barnes.
- New status: Jones, Kraish, Omid Abtahi, and Demore Barnes were promoted to series regulars for season 2.
- New cast for season 2: Dean Winters (Mr. Town), Devery Jacobs (Sam Black Crow), Kahyun Kim (Media/New Media). Kristin Chenoweth did not appear due to scheduling conflicts.

Plot
Shadow Moon, now the right-hand man and bodyguard to Mr. Wednesday, continues to navigate a war between the Old Gods (the lands’ ancient deities) and the New Gods (gods of technology and modern life).

Production notes
Season 2 was initially planned for ten episodes but was cut to eight to reduce costs after a high-budget season 1. The show also faced shifts in leadership and tone, with several script rewrites and on-set changes. Lakeside, a major story arc, was pushed to a possible third season.

Reception
The season received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes rated it around 61% with an average score of 6.05/10, while Metacritic scored it 47/100. Critics said the show kept its bold style but felt less inspired and more derivative, with some calling it hollow despite a strong cast.
