BaCaTec, established in 2000, is a technology platform that supports research exchange between Bavarian and Californian universities. Its goal is to boost cooperation between researchers from Bavaria and California, including academic and industry efforts, by providing a database to identify potential partners and helping start initial contacts. It also provides seed funding to launch new joint projects. BaCaTec encourages Bavarian and Californian institutions to expand projects that could attract external funding in the future. Active exchanges cover a range of fields. By July 2009, there had been 299 joint research projects funded through BaCaTec, with about €1.6 million spent.
