Alternative Tentacles is an independent record label started in 1979 in San Francisco by Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra and guitarist East Bay Ray. It began to release the Dead Kennedys’ self-produced single “California Über Alles” and soon grew into a home for underground punk and other offbeat music. Over the years it released records by many artists, including Dead Kennedys, NoMeansNo, D.O.A., Butthole Surfers, 7 Seconds, Neurosis, Wesley Willis, the Dicks, the Crucifucks and many more. In the mid-1980s Jello Biafra became the label’s sole owner.

The name Alternative Tentacles came from the Dead Kennedys’ debut single. The label helped launch broader exposure with the Let Them Eat Jellybeans! compilation and by promoting European tours that widened interest in the U.S. underground scene. In 1983 the label partnered with Mordam Records for distribution, helping it grow further. Over time internal disagreements led East Bay Ray to sell his stake, leaving Biafra with creative control.

In addition to music, Alternative Tentacles released spoken word albums and is known for its distinctive Winston Smith artwork, which appears on many releases. The label moved offices several times, finally settling in Emeryville, California in 2002, and switched global distribution to Revolver/Mid-Heaven in 2009. The 1985 Frankenchrist trial over artwork and a 2000 royalty dispute with the Dead Kennedys were major events that affected the label, culminating in a 2003 ruling that gave the Dead Kennedys’ rights to Decay Music and licensing to Manifesto Records.

Despite ups and downs, the label has continued to release new and archival material. By 2024 it had issued more than 500 recordings and has focused on vinyl reissues and limited editions, including a Patreon program started in 2023. In 2023 Alternative Tentacles announced a full NomeansNo catalog re-release, followed by the 2024 reissue of Wrong. The label’s legacy is closely tied to its artist-friendly approach and its enduring collaboration with Winston Smith’s artwork.
