There Came an Echo
There Came an Echo is a real-time tactics video game by Iridium Studios. It released for Windows via Steam in 2015 and for PlayStation 4 in 2016, and it follows the 2011 game Before the Echo. In the game, you guide your soldiers on the battlefield using voice commands, giving you a tactical edge. The game features voice acting from Wil Wheaton, Ashly Burch, Yuri Lowenthal, Laura Bailey, and Cassandra Morris.
It was funded on Kickstarter, raising about $115,570 from 3,906 backers, more than its $90,000 goal. Intel later invested to add RealSense technology to the game. Developers have said they would consider Linux/SteamOS if there is enough community support, but the main obstacle is proprietary voice libraries that don’t work on those platforms.
Reception was mixed on both platforms. Metacritic shows average scores in the 50s to 60s, with reviewers praising the concept but criticizing things like the story, controls, and voice recognition. Some praise, like Hardcore Gamer for the PC release, called it fresh and exciting despite flaws.
