Alice McGill

Alice McGill is an American children's writer and professional storyteller. Many of her books feature African American characters or themes.

Biography
- McGill was born in Scotland Neck, North Carolina, and attended a small four-room school.
- Her parents were readers and storytellers, which inspired her love of stories.
- She earned a four-year scholarship to Elizabeth City State University (then Elizabeth City State Teacher's College) and completed a degree in elementary education.
- She taught school for many years before becoming a traveling storyteller.
- Her storytelling research has taken her to 41 states, Canada, the West Indies, and Africa. She uses American, African, and African American folklore in libraries, classrooms, and other venues.
- One well-known performance recreates the life of Sojourner Truth, based on Truth’s writings about abolition, women’s rights, motherhood, and more.
- McGill co-wrote The Griots' Cookbook (1985) with Mary Carter Smith and Elmira M. Washington.
- She is married and lives in Columbia, Maryland.
