Alf Quantrill
Alfred Edward Quantrill (22 January 1897 – 19 April 1968) was an English footballer who played as an outside forward. He was born in Rawalpindi, British India, where his father served in the military. He began his senior football with Boston Swifts before joining Derby County in 1914. He helped Derby win promotion to Division One, but World War I interrupted his career. He served in the Derbyshire Yeomanry and, after malaria in Salonika, returned to football when the league resumed.
Quantrill earned his England cap in March 1920 in a 2–1 defeat to Wales and went on to win four caps, scoring once—the opening goal in a 5–4 home win over Scotland.
In 1921 he moved to Preston North End, forming a forward line with Tommy Roberts, Rowland Woodhouse and Archie Rawlings. He then played for Bradford Park Avenue from 1924 to 1930, making 191 appearances and scoring 58 goals, and had a later spell with Nottingham Forest from 1930 to 1932.
Off the field, Quantrill married Hetty Winifred Bloomer, the eldest daughter of former England international Steve Bloomer, and they had two children.
He died in Trefriw, Wales, in 1968 at the age of 71.
