Alabama Nunatak
Alabama Nunatak is a rocky peak sticking out above the ice in northeastern Greenland, in the King Frederick VIII Land area. It’s part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. The summit is about 1,520 meters (4,990 feet) high and the peak rises about 615 meters above the surrounding area. It lies just north of Ymer Nunatak and south of Bildsoe Nunatak, at the southwest end of Duke of Orleans Land, near where the Storstrommen glacier begins to flow south. The nunatak was named by explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen after his ship, the Alabama, during the 1909–12 Alabama Expedition. Details of its sighting and mapping are scarce because Mikkelsen’s diary was destroyed by a polar bear.
