The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) is a nonprofit, board-governed group that runs high school athletics and other competitive activities in Oregon. Based in Wilsonville, it includes both public and private schools and aims to ensure fair, competitive play.

History: OSAA began in 1918 as the Oregon State High School Athletic Association and was renamed in 1947. It is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

What it does: OSAA sponsors 74 state championships across 19 activities, including sports, music, and forensics.

Classifications and leagues: Oregon high schools are divided into six classes from 1A to 6A. Within each class, schools join leagues or conferences. Leagues typically include 4 to 15 schools, and there are usually five to eight leagues per class.

Enrollment thresholds (2026-30): 1A – fewer than 65 students; 2A – 66 to 140; 3A – 141 to 280; 4A – 281 to 580; 5A – 581 to 1025; 6A – 1026 or more.

History of the structure: In 2006-07 OSAA moved from four classes to six classes. The change was controversial at the time. OSAA reaffirmed the six-class system in 2017.

Football and other sports: Some sports divisions may shift to preserve rivalries; in football, divisions can change to reflect enrollment. In practice, many leagues are formed to maintain historic rivalries regardless of size.

Examples of leagues: There are leagues across the state, such as the Southern Oregon Conference near the Oregon-California border, and the Tri-Valley Conference in the Portland area, among others in central and eastern Oregon.

Affiliations and language: OSAA operates in English and is part of the NFHS.
