The Agency for Nuclear Projects (Nuclear Waste Project Office) is part of Nevada’s state government and works for the Governor. It is based in Carson City. In 1982, the Nevada Legislature created a seven‑member Nuclear Waste Commission to protect Nevadans and the state's environment and economy from federal plans for high‑level nuclear waste storage and related activities. The Commission advises the Governor and Legislature and oversees the Agency’s work. The Agency oversees the U.S. Department of Energy’s proposed Yucca Mountain high‑level waste repository, the federal high‑level radioactive waste program, and related federal programs. It remains ready to defend Nevada’s interests in high‑level radioactive waste management.
