Menthorpe Gate railway station
Menthorpe Gate railway station was a small stop on the Selby to Driffield Line in North Yorkshire, England, serving the village of North Duffield and the nearby hamlets of Menthorpe and Bowthorpe.
The station opened in 1853 and had two platforms. It was built by the York and North Midland Railway and later became part of the North Eastern Railway, then the London and North Eastern Railway, and finally British Railways.
The main brick station building stood at the east end of the up platform, and the signal box was on the west side of the level crossing on the down side of the line. The goods yard had two sidings and did not handle livestock.
Passenger services ended on 7 December 1953, making Menthorpe Gate one of the middle stations on the line to close. Goods traffic continued until 27 January 1964. The station building and signal box were dismantled in the early 1970s, and today only the crossing keeper’s house remains.
In the 1881 census, Frances Calvert, a 69-year-old widow, was recorded as the station mistress at Menthorpe Gate.
