Coldstream was a British ship launched at Shields in 1788, probably under a different name. Her early history isn’t clear, but she first appears as Coldstream in 1800. She was owned by Mather & Co., about 298 tons burthen, and armed with six 6-pounder guns.

Between 1801 and 1805 Coldstream made two whaling voyages to the southern oceans. In 1805, during her second voyage, a French privateer captured her near St Helena. Master Dunn and the crew were landed at St Helena, arriving there on 24 June 1805.

Her movements in records show: in 1801 she sailed from Deal for the Cape of Good Hope, and in June from Gravesend for the CGH; she reached the CGH by early 1802. She then sailed to St Helena and Cowes and returned to Gravesend by 1 October 1802. The 1802 voyage was valued at about £6,600. Later in December 1802 she turned back to the South Seas, reaching the Galápagos by 1803, and was active off Chile in mid-1803. By February 1805 she was rounding Cape Horn.

Notes in the registers say the details can vary depending on how the owners kept them.
