A la calle
A la calle (To The Streets) is a 2020 documentary directed by Maxx Caicedo and Nelson G. Navarrete. The film looks at Venezuela’s political and economic crisis, focusing on the 2017 protests and the fight for democracy under Nicolás Maduro. It features opposition figures like Leopoldo López and Juan Guaidó, along with everyday Venezuelans who are affected by the turmoil, including a medical student helping her community and a man who must emigrate to support his family.
Using undercover reporters and three years of interviews, the documentary shows the stubborn hope of ordinary people trying to change their country. The film runs 110 minutes and was produced in Venezuela and the United States. It has been shown at major festivals such as DOC NYC, the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Toronto, Amsterdam, and London, the Miami Film Festival, and DocAviv, where it won the Beyond the Screen Competition in 2021. It was also nominated for the 2021 Greg Gund Memorial Standing Up Award at the Cleveland International Film Festival.
Critics described it as a granular portrait of struggle and survival that makes the damage from Maduro’s policies clear, while some reviewers felt the storytelling could be tighter. Overall, the documentary portrays a nation desperate for change and the determination of its people to reclaim their democracy.
