808th Tank Destroyer Battalion
The 808th Tank Destroyer Battalion was a United States Army unit in World War II. Active from 1942 to 1945 and disbanded in 1945, it was commanded by Lt. Col. Robert C. McDonald Jr. The battalion, an independent unit, began with towed 3-inch anti-tank guns. It deployed to Normandy on September 19, 1944, and saw its first action on September 25 with the 80th Infantry Division. It left the 80th on December 21 and moved into the Battle of the Bulge, protecting the XII Corps flank into late January 1945. Some elements fought with the 5th Infantry Division in late December. In February 1945 it re-equipped with M36 tank destroyers and joined the 76th Infantry Division for the push to the Rhine. In April it moved to the 65th Infantry Division and advanced through southern Germany with the Third Army. By early May it reached Linz, ending the war in Austria.
